Description : In children with cleft palate deformities, there is an extremely high incidence (50% to 75%) of serous otitis media and related otologic conditions in infancy and early childhood. In patients with cleft palates, the action of the tensor palati musc rendered inefficient by the muscular and aponeurotic dehiscence in the palate. The proportion of children with cleft palate deformities who have serous otitis med lower in adolescence, since at this age the undamaged levator palati becomes increasingly more important in active opening of the tube.
