TYMPANIC MEMBRANE PERFORATION:
OPTICAL ILLUSION
Photographed via the external auditory canal
| Description |
: |
The oblique angle of the tympanic membrane at the end of the external auditory canal is responsible for a significant degree of optical distortion.
This and the next photograph of a cadaveric temporal bone indicates how difficult it is to appreciate the actual dimensions of a perforation.
This perforated tympanic membrane has been photographed with a KARL STORZ Hopkins Rod Teleotoscope inserted via the external auditory canal.
Note the “small linear” perforation.
Cadaver Specimen
Note the apparent "ovoid" shape of both the tympanic membrane and perforation. |
