MUCOID OTITIS MEDIA:
INTRODUCTION 2

Description : The normal response to inflammation of the middle ear mucoperiosteum is the primary cause of MOM. The delicate balance of the normal mucociliary system is abruptly upset in MOM.

In its response to inflammation, the mucoperiosteum attempts to rid itself of the inciting cause by developing an increased number of mucous glands and by increasing both the amount and viscosity of the mucus produced.

Here, the tympanic membrane is slightly retracted and has a slight yellowish tinge, contrasting with the chalky white color of the malleus handle.

The opalescence of the mucoid fluid within the middle ear prevents the medial wall of the middle ear from being clearly seen.
