SEROUS OTITIS MEDIA:
BEFORE AUTOINFLATION

Description : The medical treatment of serous otitis media is directed towards reestablishing normal Eustachian tube function through a combination of watchful expectancy, topical and systemic nasal decongestants, and attempts at reinflating the middle ear through the Eustachian tube by Politzerization or autoinflation (Valsalva's maneuver).

This patient has a typical serous otitis media.

Note, the orange discoloration of the tympanic membrane which is caused by the golden orange serous fluid within the middle ear cavity.

Because the serous fluid is completely clear, the examiner can see right through the fluid in the middle ear. In these cases, the structures on the medial wall of the middle ear are more easily visualized because of the presence of this clear fluid.
