SEROUS OTITIS MEDIA:
POST AUTOINFLATION

Description : This is the same patient seen in the previous photograph immediately after performing Valsalva's Maneuver.

Air has been forced up the eustachian tube into the middle ear. An air fluid level is now visible.

The Valsalva Maneuver may be all that is necessary for many patients with serous otitis media.

The raised nasopharyngeal pressure that occurs with the Valsalva Maneuver forces the lumen of the eustachian tube open and forces air into the middle ear cleft.

The air that is forced into the middle ear cleft displaces the serous fluid back down the eustachian tube.
