The pathologic changes that develop in the mucosa and the ossicles of the middle ear in the course of CSOM are the result of a combination of the normal inflammatory response and the subsequent healing process.
In CSOM, these different phases of inflammation, injury, and healing typically overlap.
As the acute inflammatory process ultimately diminishes, the regenerative response produces characteristic changes in the mucosa and submucosal layers of the middle ear cleft.
These changes will be discussed under the following headings:
The acute inflammatory response
The chronic inflammatory response
Cholesterol granuloma
Foreign-body granulomas
Tympanosclerosis
Ossicular changes |
