FOREIGN BODY GRANULOMA:
INTRODUCTION 4

Description : Substances that are exogenous to the body may be introduced intentionally or accidentally by the Otologist in the course of either medical or surgical treatment.

The intense foreign-body reaction produced by talc is a well known phenomenon that has been turned to advantage in pleural poudrage. While talc is no longer used to powder surgeons' gloves, the starch granules that have replaced it are also capable of eliciting a foreign-body reaction.

The treatment of chronic otitis media with the insufflation of chloromycetin powder or the instillation of chloromycetin ear drops can result in a foreign-body granulomatous reaction to the needle-shaped crystals.

the photograph above shows a mature foreign body reaction to cotton fibers. The cotton fibers are now encased in a fibrous tissue capsule.
