FOREIGN BODY GRANULOMA:
INTRODUCTION 1

Description : When the acute inflammatory process in the ear becomes chronic, a careful assessment must be made of any predisposing factors that could be responsible for its persistence.

Among the possible causes of CSOM that should be kept in mind is continuing local irritation by foreign material provoking a persistent granulomatous reaction.

One of the basic features of vertebrate cellular physiology is the ability of the organism to distinguish "self" from "nonself" This distinction is at times tenuous, since the body reacts to some of its own products as if they were foreign material, while some surgically implanted prosthetic materials may provoke little or no reaction at all.

This photograph, shows two foreign body giant cells surrounding a portion of a hair shaft.
