FOREIGN BODY GRANULOMA:
INTRODUCTION 3

Description : Clinically, a foreign-body granuloma manifests as chronic inflammation. The signs and symptoms will vary in severity according to the location of the granuloma and may include pain, discomfort, hearing loss or otorrhea.

Histologically, foreign-body granulomas are characterized by aggregates of chronic inflammatory cells in a hyperemic and edematous stroma, with multinucleated foreign-body giant cells located in close proximity to the foreign material.

In some cases, the foreign material may be readily visible (e.g., keratin, hair, cotton, etc), whereas other transparent but birefringent substances such as chloromycetin crystals, talc, or starch may only be seen when the tissue is examined through crossed polarizing filters.
