TYMPANOSCLEROSIS:
INTRODUCTION 4

Description : Since tympanosclerotic plaques confined to the tympanic membrane do not usually cause any symptoms, no treatment is required, and they simply stand as silent markers signifying a history of previous episodes of acute otitis media.

Surgical treatment of the conductive hearing loss cause by the tympanosclerosis is far from satisfactory, the plaques are difficult to remove and will often refix the ossicles over time.

In some patients, reconstructive middle ear surgery may be of value, whereas in others, a conservative approach with the use of a hearing aid may be more suitable.
