NORMAL GLOMUS BODY

NORMAL GLOMUS BODY

Description : Glomus bodies act as chemoreceptors and regulators of respiration and of the chemical composition of the blood.

They react to changes in the pH of the blood, the reduction of P02, and a rise in temperature of the blood.

Glomus bodies of the middle ear are commonly found in the adventitia of the dome of the jugular bulb, over half are located in this site.

Others are located along the course of Jacobson's nerve (the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve) through the jugular fossa, in the osseous canal through which Jacobson's nerve enters the middle ear (the tympanic canaliculus), and in the mucosa over the promontory along the tympanic plexus of Jacobson's nerve.

Glomus bodies may also be found along the course of Arnold's nerve (the tympanic branch of the vagus).
