Hemotympanum is the term applied to the presence of extravasated blood or a blood tinged fluid within the middle ear cavity. A hemotympanum may develop following a temporal bone fracture, barotrauma, or in association with a severe acute otitis media. A transient hemotympanum may also develop following mastoid or acoustic neuroma surgery and in some patients with epistaxis who have had posterior nasal packing inserted. |
