| Description | : | Several different types of fluid can cause a hemotympanum:fresh blood, old blood, or a mixture of blood and mucous.
A dark brown mixture of blood and mucus is found most commonly in association with secretory otitis media; the thick mucoid consistency can be appreciated. Bright red blood is more commonly associated with trauma. |
