THE HISTOLOGY OF OSSICULAR EROSION

Description : The entire body of the incus has undergone erosion due to chronic otitis media, presenting a moth-eaten appearance.

Inflammation and infection both alter the metabolic activity of bone. In normal healthy bone, there is a continuous balanced synergy between ossicular resorption and new bone formation.

In patients with chronic otitis media the synergy is often disrupted on with resultant resorption of bone as seen here.
